Comp 1

Throughout this semester, I have worked on many different genres that in the end will come together about Nicki Minaj. As I was working on these different genres, I met several course goals related to my project. Within each course goal, I stated a description and examples of how I used the specific goal towards my project all together.

  1. Students will be able to compose for particular audiences and purposes
When you are writing for a specific purpose or anything in general, it should be clear as to whom your audience is. It is very important to make is easily understandable who you are writing for so they could understand your language and way of writing better. For example, in my interview with Nicki I really have to understand and the way she speaks so they I could put my words in a way that sounds similar to her. To do this, I read several interviews online and in magazines to see how she spoke, and then applied it to my interview making them sound the same like a real live interview and in a way that makes sense.

  1. Students will be able to compose using language and conventions appropriate to the genre
For this goal, the characteristics and criteria chart helped best adapt the appropriate language. The chart was in two columns explaining a characteristic for your genre and then the criteria that should be put it. I chose to focus on my Nicki ad. For each new topic I had to write a description of it and how it was beneficial to her being more well known. This chart helped me to focus in on each criterion that was needed for each part of the genre. I also added a few pictures to really get the point across of who she was and how she was unique to all the other female artists. The characteristic chart helped me to include language that was clear to the reader and give them a better understanding on what was going to be shown.

  1. Students will be able to read, select, and use evidence critically to formulate and support arguments
While reading an article, interview or blog about your topic, it is very important to actually understand what you are reading and what is being said. This course goal focuses of the way we understand clearly what we read so that we can talk about what is being said and engage in arguments about your topic. An example relating to this goal is when we did our FAQ sheets. This whole project is about taking a problem and then explaining why we agree or disagree with it. When we first started with these sheets, we had to explain our arguments about why we disagree with the problem stated and then any questions that can be brought up about it. The FAQ sheets made it more organized to just go back and start writing out genre based on what we found. I chose to focus on my interview because the FAQ-I sheets helped me to easily go back and find the article that helped me with this genre. I was able to easily understand what was being said and gave me a better perspective on how to talk like Nicki does.

  1. Students will be able to interpret and compose in a variety of media and print/non-print genres
By going over numerous smart moves during class, it helped me grasp a better understanding on how to make my own genre better and the correct way to do it. Also, the C.R.A.P. method helped me to interpret my genres. One specific genre that it helped me in was my magazine cover. The alignment was important because it made it look more legitimate and organized. I also used the same color pink, font, and font size for my writing around the whole cover to show repetition and contrast. I made the title of the magazine larger than any of the other writing to show the emphasis and proximity of the smaller things on the cover. By following these methods, it made organizing and putting the whole genre together but easier in the end.

  1. Students will be able to discuss and apply appropriate writing processes both individually and in collaborative contexts
By having DR. Sherry and our classmates peer review our genres, it helped me to fix the mistakes that I missed when I went over it myself and to also make it sound more appropriate to the specific genre. They go over it in a way to fully understand what they actually are talking about so that you can go back and fix it yourself and adding more to it. The feedback that I received gave me more opinions than just one person, which they may also have not seen before that. Dr. Sherry also helped to have a better understanding on the three in’s and how to put them into our writing. It helped make my writing sounds more professional and give a better evaluation for each genre. After all of my revisions were made, it made me feel much more confident on my writing and also made everything sound so much better. This also applied to my professional genre. Without the help of my peers and teacher correcting my mistakes and when I went off topic, my professional genre would not make much sense. The peer review definitely helped me to also better my understanding on the professional genre and how to write it correctly.
